Stout Oak Coffee Table

   Here is the latest piece out of the studio. The top is most plainly a solid slab of European White Oak that has been resting in a barn for many years. To prevent the checking (or splits) from growing any bigger three bow ties have been added dressing this little gent nicely.

   Being fortunate enough to work with large slabs of wood it is difficult to mount the top on suitable legs. Search just a little and one will find a very eclectic mix of mostly awkward bases under a gorgeous monolith of wood. Work is still being done on a variety of supports that are appropriate and closer to the perfection that will rest above. 

An American Round Table - Only Bigger (of course)...

 Sometimes finding the perfect table can be so very very daunting. In this case I had clients that had found the perfect table from Restoration Hardware (RH) where the round table was too small and not quite the right finish. You can see the RH listing here (for now at least). Ultimately they needed the same table, only a little more ....perfect? The table from RH is built with Pine. They said that this wouldn't really work for them so they asked for other woods. In the end there were three types that went into the table- Oak and Poplar for the top and Pine for the pedestal and feet. The pedestal part of the table is carved from a single piece of wood with the legs being attached separately. Perhaps the best for the client was that I was able to use locally sourced wood from a nearby farm in Washington state. Just remember- if you want it you can get it!

Well Well Well.....

  Things are changing have changed! I won't soften the blow so here it is -the tearing off of the Band-Aid from a really hairy arm- FilliQuist is now in Sweden!
How about that!
  Once FilliQuist found out that it was moving I stopped posting (since work more or less stopped in the shop) and we began preparing for our move. With much work and a significant amount of streamlining we readied for the move. Pretty much all tools that ran on 120V electricity found new "forever homes" and the rest are on a boat in the Baltic headed to port as I type. Yea! Can't wait to get all of our goodies!!
   Since it has been about three months since the last post I figure that it is time to get back to work on the blog and in the shop.
  Since being here I have already made/put together a table, scrounged up some old school chairs, and am working on some benches for the time being....

  Oh and taking wallpaper off of our bedroom walls, patching holes, stacking firewood, clearing saplings and dead trees in the yard, meeting the neighbors.....well keeping busy, anyway.
  I will keep you informed of all the new changes...I promise. And there will be some great new content as FilliQuist gets used to a new country and continent.

The French Farm Table

Here is a story of "localvoreism".
  A couple comes to me and says, "Hey we'd like to get a table, at a good price, and maybe learn something in the process."
Me- "Ok, sure."
Well, here's the table.

Vanity: The Jackson Vanity and Mirror

   A simple bath vanity for pedestal sinks, a lower shelf for off the floor storage and an iron towel bar. The piece is to be installed in the master bath by a contractor.

Custom Copy: The Hong Sofa Table and Desk

   A couple from Seattle came to me with a request to build a piece that they liked in a catalog; but, ultimately it was not the right size for their home. The table is a classic design using steel and wood, in this case, maple.

Fresh Out of the Studio

    Fresh out the door is a side table that will be used as a vanity for a bathroom. The new owners will be using marble vessel sinks. Finishing touches include the matching mirror and towel bar below the vanity top.

Introducing: The Nelson Bench

A client requested a simple and economical bench to go with the Farmhouse Table they ordered and this is what I came up with for them. It is 5 feet long 11 1/2 inches wide and 19" tall and can handle a family growing up on them with ease. The design now bears the family name for which it was designed "The Nelson". The bench is available at a price of $120 bare and $150 in most any finish and is guaranteed to last the 20 years or so it takes to raise a family . A Complete DIY Farmhouse Table

  Tis the season all 'round the (Northern) world that we begin to think about the harvest season, the holiday season and most of all- just being indoors. Spending more time indoors working and entertaining requires a good size table.
    I myself am not interested in shelling out a few hundred to a couple thousand bucks for a good size table. So I decided to make one ! AND share the process with you! The cost of materials?  Wood, glue and screws-$60 Tops. That's it.
    If you need to buy the tools then plan on about another $150 to $200 for a low end table saw or a hand held circular saw, a cordless drill and some drill bits. Or borrow one from a neighbor or friend or work with them on the project!
  Surprisingly there are many steps that can be skipped and I will note them with an *. Not doing the steps will result in a less finished looking table but a table just the same.  So, shall we get started?

Welcome to FilliQvist

So, welcome! This being the first post I'll keep it brief as I am still figuring out this whole blog thing. After all you have to start somewhere and this is it: The Start!

     As of late I've been into designing/building furniture and interior design. It fell into my lap about a year ago and I decided to run with it. Attached to this first post is a few of my projects from this first year. Enjoy!!
